ਪਵਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਧਰਤਿ ਮਹਤੁ ॥

Air is Guru, water is father and earth is the great mother.
Japji Sahib, Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, concluding Salok, Ang 8. There is no Rahao in this Salok.[1]
Can a Sikh sing Vande Mataram?
The question now comes wrapped in politics. Those who sing the song may be praised as patriots. Those who hesitate may be asked to prove their loyalty to India. But a Sikh cannot begin with either praise or accusation. We must first ask what the words mean, what they ask the singer to do, and whether that act can stand under Shabad Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
The strongest argument in favour of the song begins with something true. Gurbani itself calls the earth mother. A Sikh may love the country of birth, recognise what its soil and people have given, and serve it with courage. “Motherland” is not, by itself, the problem. If our objection begins by denying this, it begins weakly.
But Guru Nanak Sahib Ji does not take one territory, place it above other lands and turn it into a divine being. The complete Salok holds day, night and sagal jagat—the whole world—within one creation, then turns towards conduct, honest effort and Naam. Earth is mother within the Creator’s order. She is not made the Creator, and the Sikh is not asked to worship her.
The difference between honour and worship
In Raag Sorath, Guru Nanak Sahib Ji gives the centre before addressing the worship of gods, goddesses and stone-images:
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਦੁਤੁਕੀ ॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ ਤੂ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੁ ॥
ਹਉ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਖੰਡੀਆ ਭਾਈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sorath mahalaa 1 pahilaa dutukee.
mere preetamaa too kartaa kar vekh.
hau paapee paakhandeeaa bhaa-ee, man tan Naam visekh. Rahao.
O my Beloved, You are the Creator; having created, You behold. I am sinful and hypocritical. Let Naam be foremost in mind and body. Rahao.
Later in the same Shabad, Guru Nanak Sahib Ji says:
ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ਪੂਜੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਗਉ ਕਿਆ ਦੇਹਿ ॥
ਪਾਹਣੁ ਨੀਰਿ ਪਖਾਲੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਬੂਡਹਿ ਤੇਹਿ ॥੬॥
devee devaa poojeeaai bhaa-ee, kiaa maago kiaa deh.
paahan neer pakhaaleeaai bhaa-ee, jal meh booddeh teh.
Why worship goddesses and gods? What could I ask from them, and what can they give? The stone is washed in water, but it sinks in that same water.
Raag Sorath, Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, Mahala 1, Pahila Dutuki, Angs 636–637. The Rahao places the Creator and Naam at the centre of the complete Shabad.[2]
The Sikh objection does not arise from hostility towards Hindus, Hindu language or Hindu forms of devotion. Other people are free to worship according to their faith. The Sikh question is narrower and more demanding: can the Sikh direct bhakti and bowing towards a territorial mother when the Guru has placed the Sikh before the One Creator?
The Sikh Rehat Maryada later states the same boundary plainly: “Worship should be rendered only to the One Timeless Being and to no god or goddess.”[3] The Maryada does not govern Gurbani; it bears witness to the discipline already given by the Shabad.
Read the whole song—and its history
The opening two stanzas of Vande Mataram describe a land rich with water, fruit, crops, cool breezes, flowering trees, moonlit nights and sweet speech. No goddess is named and no temple-image is mentioned. Those verses can be heard as poetry about a beautiful, life-giving homeland.
This matters. We should not accuse every Sikh who has sung the familiar opening of knowingly worshipping a goddess. Many will have known only those verses and understood them as a civic salute. The complete song, however, does not stop there.
The Mother becomes armed and terrible before her enemies. The singer says, namami tarineem, ripudala-varineem Mataram: I bow to the deliverer who drives away the enemy host. Then come tumi vidya, tumi dharma—you are knowledge; you are dharma—and hrdaye tumi Ma bhakti: in the heart, Mother, you are devotion. Her pratima, her image, is fashioned or installed in temple after temple. The next stanza says, tvam hi Durga dasha-praharana-dharinee: you indeed are Durga, bearer of ten weapons. The Mother is also identified with Kamala, or Lakshmi, and Vani, or Saraswati. The singer again says, namami: I bow.[4]
The verb vande can mean salute, honour, revere, pay homage or worship. One dictionary choice cannot decide the matter. The movement of the complete Sanskritised Bengali composition does: the beautiful land becomes the divine Mother, devotion is placed in her, her image is set in temples, she is named as Durga and the singer bows. This may be sincere Hindu devotion. A Sikh should neither mock it nor misdescribe it. But it is not the Sikh’s path of worship.
Nor is that religious reading an invention of the song’s critics. The present Government of India has called Vande Mataram a mantra, spiritual devotion to Maa Bharati and worship of the nation in maternal form. The Home Minister has called it a devotional hymn and linked the country’s prosperity, knowledge and security with the grace and worship of Mother India.[5] The government cannot celebrate the complete song as worship and then tell a Sikh that no religious act is involved.
Its history deserves the same honesty. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay composed the song in the 1870s and placed it in Anandamath, published as a book in 1882. In the novel, militant Hindu ascetics called the Santans renounce ordinary family life to serve the Mother. Land, Mother and Goddess are drawn together. The story contains anti-Muslim hostility and conflict with Company forces, yet ends by accepting British rule as a temporary stage towards religious renewal.[6]
The song later acquired a life beyond the novel. Rabindranath Tagore sang from it at the 1896 Congress session. During the movement against the partition of Bengal in 1905 it became an anti-colonial cry associated with resistance and sacrifice. Its anti-colonial life cannot erase its devotional and sectarian inheritance; its original setting cannot erase the sacrifice later made under its words.[6]
This tension was faced rather than concealed in 1937. Jawaharlal Nehru read Anandamath and concluded that, although some agitation was political, the grievance had substance.[7] Tagore, who had helped give the song its national life, distinguished the opening description of a beneficent motherland from the later hymn to Durga. The Congress Working Committee recommended only the first two stanzas at national gatherings. It did not alter or ban Bankim’s literary work. It tried to honour the song’s part in the freedom movement without making its complete religious vision a condition of Indian belonging.[8]
On 24 January 1950, Constituent Assembly President Rajendra Prasad named Jana Gana Mana as the National Anthem and said that Vande Mataram should be honoured equally because of its historic part in the freedom struggle. He made a presidential statement rather than putting a formal resolution to the Assembly, and he did not specify a number of stanzas.[9] The two-stanza accommodation therefore continued in practice.
When the song becomes a test of loyalty
In 2026, the Union government formalised a six-stanza protocol. The Ministry of Home Affairs now lists all six stanzas, lasting about three minutes and ten seconds, as the official version. That version alone is to be used in mass singing, and audiences are told to stand to attention. The order says that a school may begin its day with community singing; it does not say that every child must sing. When the National Song and National Anthem are both performed, the Song comes first.[10]
Vande Mataram was rendered at the Red Fort Independence Day ceremony for the first time in August 2026. When the Congress then reaffirmed the historic two-stanza practice for its own events, the Home Minister called the decision “anti-national” and said it violated the new law.[11]
But Parliament did not enact a duty requiring every citizen to sing all six stanzas. The August 2026 amendment makes it an offence intentionally to prevent the singing of the National Anthem or National Song, or to disturb an assembly engaged in it.[12] In Bijoe Emmanuel v State of Kerala, the Supreme Court protected schoolchildren who stood respectfully but did not sing the National Anthem for reasons of religious conscience. Their silence neither prevented the singing nor disturbed the assembly.[13] Bijoe Emmanuel concerned the National Anthem, so it does not directly decide the position under the amended law. Its reasoning is nevertheless powerful: respectful silence neither prevents the singing nor disturbs those who sing.
On 26 August 2026, Sikh organisations asked the Acting Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib for guidance on these questions.[14] No response to this new request had been issued when this article was published. PanthSeva cannot manufacture one. It can only offer Shabad-led vichaar.
The Sikh answer
I do not believe that a Sikh should sing the present official six-stanza Vande Mataram. India may be loved and served, and Gurbani itself calls the earth mother. The difficulty begins where love of country becomes religious devotion: the complete song asks the singer to address the country as Durga, install her image in temples and bow before her as the source of dharma and bhakti.
The first two stanzas must still be distinguished from the whole. They contain no named goddess or temple-image and can be understood as a civic salute to a beautiful homeland. A Sikh who has sung them with that understanding should not be casually declared an idol-worshipper. Another Sikh may still judge that bowing to a personified nation crosses the line of conscience. No Sikh should be compelled to sing even those verses. Conscience cannot be genuine only when the state finds it convenient.
A Sikh may stand respectfully while others sing and should neither heckle, obstruct nor prevent them. Hindus and others must remain free to sing with the meaning their faith gives the words. They must equally allow a Sikh, Muslim, Christian, Brahmo or any other person to remain silent without being marked as disloyal. This is what Nirbhau and Nirvair require in public life: neither surrender through fear nor hostility towards another.
India does not become weaker when a Sikh serves it faithfully from within Sikhi. Sikhs have shown that service through labour, public duty, defence of neighbours and sacrifice. Citizenship should be judged by how we live with and serve one another, not by whether every citizen can be made to speak the same religious words. A country can be loved, served and defended without being worshipped.
A Sikh can honour many things. But the Sikh does not live under many Gurus.
