Pauri 34: Earth as dharamsaal — where actions matter, grace leaves its marks, and the raw and ripe are revealed
Where we are in Japji
Pauri 33 stripped away the ego’s claim to independent power.
Now Pauri 34 turns to the stage on which life unfolds:
night and season, wind and water, fire and the lower regions — and in the middle of all this, earth is established as a dharamsaal.
Japji is telling us: this life is not random.
It is a place of living, acting, and being weighed truthfully.

ਰਾਤੀ ਰੁਤੀ ਥਿਤੀ ਵਾਰ ॥
ਪਵਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਤਾਲ ॥
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਥਾਪਿ ਰਖੀ ਧਰਮ ਸਾਲ ॥
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੀਅ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕੇ ਰੰਗ ॥

Night, seasons, dates, days;
wind, water, fire, and the lower regions —
within this whole setting, the earth has been established as a dharamsaal:
a place to live, act, and be weighed truthfully.
Here live beings of many kinds and many forms,
with countless names.
According to each one’s deeds, there is discernment.
True is the One. True is the Court.
There, the Panch — the accepted ones — shine openly.
By grace, the mark is received.
There, the raw and the ripe are recognised.
Nanak: only on going there does it become clear.
Learning focus
1) Earth is not a waiting room
Japji calls the earth a dharamsaal.
That means life is not just something to “get through.”
It is a place of responsibility, formation, and truthful action.
2) Actions matter
“Karmee karmee ho-e veechaar” is a strong line.
Japji does not reduce life to labels or claims.
It says there is discernment according to deeds.
Not performance.
Not slogans.
Not reputation.
3) The Court is true because the One is true
This is not a theatre of arbitrary judgment.
“Sachaa aap, sachaa darbaar.”
The Court is true because the One is true.
That keeps the pauri from becoming mere fear-language.
4) The Panch appear again
We met the Panch earlier. Here they return — not as spiritual celebrities, but as those who shine openly in that true Court.
And even then, Japji adds the safeguard:
“Nadaree karam pavai neesaan.”
The mark is received by grace.
5) “Raw” and “ripe” become visible
This is one of the most searching lines in the pauri.
A person can look strong outwardly and still be inwardly raw.
A person can look small outwardly and yet be inwardly ripe.
Japji says: in the true Court, that difference is known.

one act of seva without credit,
one restraint when ego wants to win.
